The World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI) semi-annual members meeting was held December 6th and 7th in Madrid, Spain. Bas Hobson, Executive Vice President from TAM International attended the meetings. As part of the WNTI meetings a site visit to the Trillo nuclear power plant was held on December 5th. The WNTI group was given an overview of the nuclear energy program in Spain and a tour of the interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuels.
The semi-annual members meetings in Madrid consisted of various working groups including the uranium ore concentrates group discussions on checklists, subcontractor standards and transport risk. The HEXT working group discussed the pending changes to shipments of small quantities and the impact it may have on the industry. There was a presentation from a transporter on the Fukushima aftermath on experiences in shipping after the event.

Jamie Smith, Operations Manager at TAM International attended the 2nd annual China International Nuclear Symposium in Hong Kong where members from the industry gathered to learn more about China’s current nuclear power footprint and plans for the future. Discussions included but weren’t limited to: China’s nuclear power development post Fukushima including lessons learned, uranium deposits and resource potential in China, nuclear education and training of professionals in China and presentations from Cameco and CGNPC on their roles in nuclear fuel cycle. TAM International looks forward to its continuing participation in the Chinese nuclear energy industry.
After the symposium Mr. Smith, along with other colleagues in the industry, participated in a tour at the Port of Shanghai which included visits to the Zhanghuabang terminal where radioactive shipments are handled and the Waigaoqiao terminal where radioactive materials are received. The Port visit was followed by meetings with several Chinese representatives from the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) and Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) spread across spread across regions such as Shanghai, Tianjin and Shenzhen and members of the Port Authority of Qingdao, Ningbo and Shenzhen. This was a wonderful opportunity for members of the industry to share best practices and learn more about the issues and challenges faced in China.

Jamie Smith, Operations Manager at TAM International, successfully completed DGI training in Philadelphia, PA. He was successfully trained and tested in the transportation of Radioactive Materials in accordance with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code and the U.S. Department of Transportation (49CFR, Part 172, Subpart H). TAM International is committed to ongoing training and education relating to the transportation of radioactive materials.

An accredited ISO auditor from the UK visited TAM headquarters in Saskatoon, SK in late October 2011 to perform a thorough audit of TAMs quality system, procedures and processes based on ISO 9001:2008 guidelines. TAM International is pleased to announce it was a success and has been officially re-certified. TAM is committed to continually improving their quality system and it is an integral part of their day to day operations.
